include the following:
They are healthy and easy to keep.
They are raised for MEAT only, and don’t need shearing – they shed!
They are fast growing and early maturing, with an extended breeding season (3 lamb crops/2 years).
They are excellent mothers.
They are parasite tolerant.
They produce superior meat - Extremely tender and mild flavour.
Dorpers crossed with Kahtadin's give a variety of fun pelt colors to look at in the pasture.
Both breeds are very docile, hardy animals and adaptable to any environment.
Both the Dorper and Kahtadin breeds are meat sheep that shed their thick winter coat in the spring. The
Dorper breed is known for its thicker stockier conformation and was originally developed for the arid regions of South Africa, but has proven to be adaptable to many conditions throughout the world. Their coats can be either all white, or white bodies with a black head and neck. The Kahtadin breed is considered to be more moderately sized and their coats can be all colors between white and brown, including spotted mixtures. Both breeds have a high fecundity, and multiple births are the norm. The ewes have great udders and are good milkers. Dorpers and Kahtadin's are known for their calm dispositions. They show exceptional adaptability, hardiness, reproductive rates and growth (being able to reach approximately 80 lbs in 4 months ). By crossing the Kahtadin ewe with the with well proportioned Dorper ram, the lamb offspring have a larger body frame with more hind muscling. The best asset of the Dorper is in the hind quarters where the most expensive meat is produced. The meat from this cross of lamb is lean and very mild in flavor. A mature Dorper \ Kahtadin cross ewe averages 180-210 lbs, and mature ram averages from 225 lbs to 250 lbs.
